Architects TADW Developer Northern Counties Housing Association Contractor CSC Construction.
This is a special award for affordable housing, namelzing that any developer needs something special to create a high quality mixed use scheme from mostly derelict buildings on a 1:3 gradient in a six centuries old location riddled with alleyways. The scheme comprises conversion of a tobacco warehouse with new adjacent block, 8 shared ownership apartments and three retail units all part of a 10 year programme. The new build flats have comfortable plans but what impresses is the size of and design of their huge balconies overlooking the internal courtyard. These are well screened from each other so are able to offer private outdoor space in a location which has all the geography of a medieval hill town but until now without the serendipity.
